Our Story

My grandma wanted to paint, so i made it happen.

Crafts & Companions was founded in honor of my late grandmother, Sandy. When she moved into assisted living she was having a tough transition. I asked if she could do any activity to get out of her room, what would it be and she said she'd really like to start painting again. I was determined to get my grandma out of her room and selfishly it gave me an excuse to make art and spend time with my grandma, so I reached out to volunteer at her facility. As of March 2024 Crafts & Companion's has officially been on the facilities calendar as "Art with Cindy". My grandma passed in April 2025 but I have continued to volunteer to spend my time twice a month with the residents.

Some days I could have 3 - 8 residents during craft time. To me, it's not about the quantity of residents, it's about the connection and creativity. I always encourage residents to just come "hang out" even if they're not feeling confident about their creativity. I don't pressure them to make anything, I just want them to feel seen and invited. I have seen the residents wow themselves with their creations, grow their confidence and even learn new skills. I know their favorite colors and which ones say "I can't do it" and go on to make a beautiful creation. When the tables are full of residents, wheelchairs, oxygen and walkers it reminds me we are never too old to try something new.

I'm building community, connection and self confidence. "Art with Cindy" has now become Crafts & Companions as of April 2026. I look forward to seeing how Crafts & Companions can grow and support the aging community in Central Ohio.
